Communicating the value of mixed methods research

A Question often Asked by Students and Workshop Participants: Blog Post from https://qualitativelyorientedmixedmethodsresearch.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

Q: For students in disciplines that lean heavily quantitative or heavily qualitative, where are the best strategies to communicate the value of mixed methods research ?

A: My recommendation about communicating the value of mixed methods research involves being sensitive to audience. One way is to use language or terminology familiar and valued by them. That can mean, for example, using the language of triangulation and validity to frame the value of mixed methods research. Both of these are terms that are shared by both qualitative and quantitative researchers. Quantitative researchers tend to prize, above all, the value of using mixed methods to confirm or elaborate a quantitative results. They are likely to key into using language about the ability of mixed methods to triangulate findings with data from multiple sources.

Qualitative researchers, on the other hand, generally are less inclinded to value the language of confirmation or reliability. They resonate with language that points to how mixed methods research contributes to the ability to view of phenomenon from multiple angles.

In this context, sensitivity to audience means adopting language that shows appreciation for the purposes and quality measures valued by qualitative and quantitatively oriented researchers. That it aids communication on a team is an added value of incorporating language about validity and traingulation.
